Moving Home With Pets

Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful things a person can do, so it is hardly surprising that a dog or cat might also find it a difficult time. Our pets are very adaptable, but we can make things easier on them with a little careful planning.

Moving With Dogs

Dogs are very sensitive creatures and the easiest option might be for them to stay with friends or even at a boarding kennel for the move to allow you time to box things up, move, and then unpack again. Have your home removals firm keep the dog’s bed, toys and bowls separate so that once you introduce your dog to the new home, all their belongings are there and things smell familiar.

There will be lots of new smells, so be patient with them as they become used to them. Make time for them, and try to keep your routine as close to normal as possible. Be patient if there are a few accidents in the early stages.

Moving With Cats

On the day of the move, confine your cat to one room and put a sign on the door so that everyone, including your home removals firm, knows to keep the door closed. Alternatively, consider sending them to a cattery for a few days.

As with dogs, make sure all their familiar items are moved with them, and consider giving them an old item of clothing that smells like the former house to offer some security while they become used to the new surroundings. Keep them in one room for a few days at the other end of the move, too, so that they acclimatise without being overwhelmed.

Check that your boundary is secure before letting any pet out into the garden. If there is a risk that your cat will return to old territory (i.e. you have not moved far) ask the old neighbours not to feed them!
