Tips for Living Alone for the First Time

Living alone can feel intimidating, but it also has a lot of advantages. Whether you’re moving into your first home, or you’re changing spaces, if you’re living alone for the first time, these are some top tips for solo life.

Budgeting and Paperwork

1. Set aside money when you get paid to cover your bills. It’s also a good idea to allocate yourself some spending money and move the remainder of your income into a savings account out of sight, out of mind. Then have a good safety net to fall back on in an emergency.

2. It can feel overwhelming to do all of the administration required for a house move on your own. First off, you’ll want to set up your utilities including water, gas, internet and so forth. You’ll also need to change your address with your bank, and other services. Make a list, work through it gradually and it’ll soon be done.

Embrace the fear and love your space

3. One of the best things about living on your own is being able to decorate your space with items you love. There’s no need to compromise with anyone else so you can set your home up exactly as you’d like.

4. It can sometimes feel a bit worrying to think about what might happen if the sink blocks and you don’t know how to fix it. But remember that any problem you face can be sorted out with help from a plumber, friends and family and even YouTube.

5. Living on your own is a great chance to discover the things you love and build independence. If you want to have ice cream for dinner, why not? Fancy doing a workout at midnight? Go for it (provided that the neighbours don’t mind!).
